If you're here, you probably donated, so the first thing we have to say is: thank you. Sincerely thank you. You've made a difference - every donation does.

But what Fandom Gives is trying to do is harness the immense and inspiring energy of fandom to change the world for the better, so let's see how much of a difference we all make together. Tell us who you donated to, and how much, and at the end of the two weeks, we will be able to see just how big a force for good fandom can be when it wants to be.

Tell us how much you gave, and to whom!

What a truly marvelous idea. I hope people dig deep! I decided that I would give $10 for every instance of rape, sexual abuse and incest in my own fanfic to RAINN.

I make that $425 dollars in the first dozen donations (assuming £1=$2). Amazing. And heartwarming.

WONDERFUL idea! I've donated and will spread the word, too...

This is the comment I posted in my RAINN donation:

"This donation is offered in honor of the LiveJournal community, fandom_gives, which is a response to the banning of numerous LJ communities and personal journals simply because they listed abuse-related topics in their interests.

We fen would like to make a clear demonstration of the truth that it is possible to explore disturbing content in art, fiction, and reflective pieces, while reviling and actively working against real-life abuse . We offer our support to survivors of rape, incest, and child molestation in the most concrete way we have available."

I shamelessly stole your beautiful words to include in my comments to RAINN, only changing "fen" to "fans, artists, and writers." (In case they didn't know what that 'fen' is one of the plurals for 'fan.')

I sincerely hope that you don't mind.

In the RAINN partner field, I put "fandom_gives."

I figured my donation to that charity was enough of a statement as to my feelings toward its work, so I didn't put a wonderful comment like manycolored did. I did, however, state that I wasn't purchasing anything from LJ (notably the PA).

I gave $25.00 to RAINN. Plus I'm going to put up a link and issue a challenge for others to give. This is a wonderful thing to do. :)

This is a WONDERFUL idea! I was going to give them the amount I usually give to LJ for my paid account and extra user pics, but that's not an option, unfortunately. T-T Thanks for coming up with this!

That's what I did - $19.95 for the year's account, $10 for the user pics, then converted it into NZ dollars. It came out pretty much exactly $40, so apparently the kiwi dollar's pretty strong right now. o.o It used to be more like $60.

Wow. I'm just glad I had the money to help out! And I'm so proud of fandom. It's not something to be messed with; when we get behind something we are by far the most passionate people around.

Which is why it's hilarious when people claim we only care about porn.

I know! Porn isn't ALL of it...only most of it! J/K LOLZ!

I've tended to keep silent about this as far as discussion goes because everything that I could say has pretty much been said, though I have been keeping a close eye on everything. And that's why I'm glad about this. It's my way to showing support without getting all ranty and repeating everything for the bazillionth time.

Hello! I love this idea, and I will be giving the money I had set aside for a permanent account to RAINN. I started off with $25 and then set up automatic monthly payments of $10. It's not as big a hit to my credit card as the perm account would have been and it covers more time, and is for a better cause.

Thank you for this community and idea! The money that I'd spend on my now cancelled paid accounts will also be given to the charities listed here in 2008 and beyond.

$25 dollars to RAINN. An excellent idea, it shows that we are more than just random people reading random stuff, we are a community.

Mankind UK appears not to be cheques-only if you donate through CAF Online, which is a big UK portal for charity donations. I believe dezzikitty and I have made donations to all four UK charities on the list that way, but perhaps we ought to wait a few days to make sure our donations don't bounce as undeliverable, or equivalent... :-/

Great idea! Just wanted to also let you know that your link in the donate post for Prevent Child Abuse leads to an error page because it has an additional LJ url in there.

Announcements in LJ Communities
Do you have an announcement I could forward to the moderators of middleearthnews? The community has several hundred members.
(I apologize if someone has already asked this and I missed the message.)
Thanks,

No - we don't have an official announcement, as it were, but if you like, feel free to use this pimp and modify it however you want.

This movement -- not just fandom_gives, but all of strikethrough07 -- has taught me so much about not only myself but also Australian government policy. Which I am sorely in need of given the upcoming federal election, and I really love that fandom has been able to give that to me.

Thank you. I give $5 (which is more than I can really give at the moment -- yes I "only" owe my parents, but I owe my parents more than just $1500) to both of the Australian organizations, because I do believe in protecting not only Australia's kids, but the whole world's. But I'll always call Australia home.

US $100 to RAINN.

Anonymous not because I'm ashamed of the donation or to whom, but because I feel a little odd listing my name and amount in a public poll.

In case people are curious about running tallies:

Just tipping US$4000 at the start of the sixth day. I'd love to see us get to $10,000. It's just such a lovely, round figure.

*grins* $25 to RAINN, and in return, a truly comfortable feeling inside. Funny the way this sort of thing puts you at peace, isn't it? And proud, too, to be a fanfic author and a member of the LJfen and all that good stuff.

Thank you for taking the negativity surrounding strikethrough and turning it into such a positive thing. I commend you on such thoughtfulness and maturity.

I've made a donation, and I'll put the word out in my own journal. Thank you, once again.

I am hoping that I will be able to join around mon-tues... I will give whatever I can afford.

Thank you for doing this. I am somewhat new to the whole fandom dealie(only been around for about 6 months) but this whole issue has been pretty devastating to me.

I am proud to be a fan-girl.

Because I was curious, I added up from beginning to my poll entry - it's almost _$5000_! I calculated approximately for most currencies - and that's not including the one anonymous amount - and altogether, we're at $4962 USD. Amazing!!

What a great gift.
